BUNYONYI YOUNG ORPHANS AND AGRICULTURE PROJECT

Lobbying and advocacy interventions are required to ensure the needs of children in abject poverty are met. The UNESCO (2003) Study on children in abject poverty in Uganda revealed that: the lack of adequate health services are critical challenges for children in abject poverty. This situation is aggravated by the living conditions of children in almost all the studied districts. School-related costs have been the major obstacle for children in abject poverty to access education as well as nutritional food health

On a positive note, over three-quarters of those who are ill sought modern medical treatment last year and very few ill people visited traditional healers.

Bunyonyi Young Orphans and Agriculture Project Is a Registered Ugandan, community-based Non-Profit based in the Bunyonyi Community of Kitumba which is a sub-county of the Kabale District.

Our Goal is to improve the quality of life of it's impoverished children, many of which are orphans, through providing education, care, love and support. BYOAP instructs and coordinates community-based agricultural projects at a location 12 Km north of Kabale, Uganda so that that the children and their families won't go hungry.

Education of the world's children is high on the global agenda. In the context of "EDUCATION FOR ALL", all children deserve free, good quality education. The reality is that millions of children in the poverty cycle are too poor to benefit from this statement unless there are programs in place specifically for the poor including poverty eradication.

The Bunyonyi Project is aimed at children classified as disadvantaged and poor in Uganda. Research shows that children in abject poverty can be easily recognized. Top on the list is absence of basic necessities such as shelter, food, clothing and clean water. Equally important is the "human condition" in terms of physical health and parental care and protection. Schooling is high on the list as an important criteria in determining how much assistance the child needs.

While the PEAP (Poverty Eradication Action Plan) is becoming better as it evolves, due to the oversight and plan reviews it receives, it still does not address many of the challenges our disadvantaged children face on a daily basis.

AGRICULTURAL PROJECT

BUNYONYI YOUNG ORPHANS AND AGRICULTURE PROJECT

Not only is the Bunyonyi Young Orphans Project (BYOAP) educating and giving the local orphans love and care so that they flourish but we are also additionally supporting the local farmers and other orphans in the Kabale area.

We provide enough food to feed 25 poor Kabale Area families as well as 47 additional orphans in addition to our own. The land that is farmed is scattered throughout the district and getting all food supplies to the central distribution point is difficult. It is then distributed to those that need the food to survive.

Any leftover food is shared with other orphanages and other families that need it in the neighboring areas.

The children help in the garden after school to learn much needed farming skills.
